In the days leading up to the 2026 NBA Draft, the Dallas Mavericks were shopping center Daniel Gafford in attempts to acquire a top-20 pick to go along with their No. 9 selection. While teams were not willing to give up an immediate first-round pick in this year's draft, league sources say the Atlanta Hawks engaged in trade conversations with the Mavs.

Before the start of free agency and after the draft, these two teams once again discussed the potential of a trade involving Gafford, with the Hawks wanting to part ways with Buddy Hield. Sources also said there were brief talks of Klay Thompson, who the Mavs are actively looking to move, also being involved in a deal with Gafford to Atlanta. Sources say Thompson would like to go to a team on the West Coast, preferably in Los Angeles.

Hield would welcome a trade to the Mavs, especially considering he owns a home in the area where he has hosted his previous teams for summer workouts in the past. The Hawks are hoping to utilize the 33-year-old sharpshooter's $9.6 million contract for the 2026-27 season as a way to find an impactful frontcourt talent to pair with Onyeka Okongwu.

It doesn't appear as if the Hawks' front office is done making moves this offseason, considering that they will continue to explore trades utilizing Hield's contract to improve what they believe can be a threatening roster in the East during the 2026-27 season.

The Detroit Pistons are looking for ways to retool this offseason on the heels of their run to the top seed in the Eastern Conference last year. The Pistons have already made some key additions and subtractions, including watching Tobias Harris depart in free agency and signing free agent big man John Collins, but they’re apparently looking to make a much bigger splash.

Just two years ago, Jaylen Brown won Finals MVP as the Celtics cruised to their first championship in 16 years. Now, he’s heading to Boston’s division rival in a deal so wildly unpopular with fans that Celtics executive Brad Stevens was forced to deactivate his Instagram account.

Let’s break down the details and try to piece together why this trade is getting so much blowback from the Celtics faithful, and how it’s transformed the Sixers fortunes practically overnight.

Philadelphia Receives: Jaylen Brown

Boston Receives: Paul George, 2028 first-round pick, 2032 first-round pick, 2028 second-round pick, 2030 second-round pick

Why Philadelphia said yes: You’d be hard-pressed to find a better deal for an All-NBA player in their prime than what the Sixers just pulled off. Brown certainly has his flaws, but he’s still an excellent volume scorer, a more than capable defender, and a proven playoff performer who can drop 30 points on just about anyone. With Paul George’s contract considered to be a net-negative by many around the league, this trade was essentially just for two first-round picks. Even if things don’t work out, Philly can still build around their excellent young guard duo of Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. The Sixers immediately vault themselves onto the shortlist of Grade-A title contenders, and on a discount at that.

Why Boston said yes: This trade may go down as one of the defining front-office gambles of the modern era, and the ultimate test of the “analytics over everything” mindset that has become pervasive in recent years. Brown has, admittedly, not been an analytical darling over the course of his career, and it’s easy to see why a numbers-oriented front office might see his production as replaceable, especially when Boston has talented players like Peyton Pritchard waiting in the wings. In fact, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Celtics did not even see Brown as the best player on their team last season. Add in simmering discontent over being included in a rumored trade package for Giannis Antetokounmpo, and you start to see why they would consider moving him. But this still seems like an incredibly mild return for a five-time All-Star with such an impressive resume on paper.
