Siegel’s Scoop: Free agency updates on Peyton Watson, Jalen Duren, and more 🕵️

Where will Peyton Watson end up?

At Summer League, there was talk of something in the 19 to $21 million range that the Nuggets were presenting to Peyton Watson's camp, and he was also exploring that kind of value on the open market with teams like the Clippers, the Milwaukee Bucks, and the Atlanta Hawks.

Of those three teams, the Hawks are a team that's kinda backed out a little bit. They're still in the mix for Watson, but not as much. They don't wanna give up too many assets, especially two first-round picks like the Nuggets have been asking for.

That leaves it to the Clippers and Bucks. The Kawhi Leonard investigation is holding up any potential moves that the Clippers could make. Until that's solved, they don't know how much money they're gonna have on their books, especially if Kawhi does come back.

And then from the Bucks’ perspective, they're certainly a team that is at the forefront of these conversations. They're a team that can easily make this happen. And the one thing that Watson has in common with the Bucks is the connection to Klutch Sports. They drafted Brayden Burries 10th overall, who is a Klutch Sports client. And they also gave Gary Trent Jr. a very interesting contract this offseason, a four-year, $60 million deal that everybody kinda scratched their head on. Those are two Klutch connections, and Watson is a Klutch client as well. So just something to keep an eye on there with the Bucks.

If there's one team that could go out and pursue Peyton Watson that's not among the Hawks, the Bucks, and the Clippers, I'm still kinda looking at the Memphis Grizzlies, and wondering, are they done with their offseason, or are they gonna still look to make moves? Because I think Peyton Watson would fit in really well there next to Cam Boozer and the young, dynamic players that they have on the wing, like Jaylen Wells and Cedric Coward.

Jalen Duren latest

I don't see the qualifying offer being an option whatsoever for Jalen Duren. A guy coming off an All-Star, All-NBA season, if he takes a qualifying offer, that would be a major gamble on himself. It would be like going to the roulette table in Las Vegas and putting $10,000 down on black or red at 50/50 and just kinda guessing.

It's much more likely that they find some kinda middle ground here, because the word from the Pistons throughout free agency has been pretty much the same as the Nuggets’ with Watson: they're not getting rid of Duren, and they're serious about that. There have been no sign-and-trade discussions. They've shut those down completely at the start of free agency, and they've made it very clear that Duren will be on their roster entering the '26-27 season.

It's just a matter of what this price point's gonna look like and how many years a new deal's gonna be, because they're far apart on value. The Pistons don't see him being worth more than that $30 million range. Jalen Duren's side, they view him as a max-level player, and rightfully so. Maybe $30 million is a little bit low, and they can go a little bit higher, but I think they do find middle ground on a new long-term deal.

Klay Thompson: Trade or Buyout?

Is Klay Thompson a potential buyout candidate? We have not heard at any point that Klay and his reps have approached Dallas for a buyout. Dallas, though, is looking to trade him. They don't have interest in buying him out. They want to get something back for Klay, and so that's why they're holding him basically as an inflated trade exception to try to get something for him.

It does seem like the Miami Heat are a viable landing spot. We mentioned Nikola Jović as an almost identical salary match for Klay, so we'll see if a deal gets done there.
